• JUNIPER

    Collection Story

The Juniper collection is rooted in storytelling, mapping, and folk traditions, with a strong emphasis on hand-painted texture and narrative-led design. Inspiration is drawn from historic textiles, early cartography, domestic craft, and naïve art, where making was slow, purposeful, and often deeply personal. Across the collection, motifs are painted by hand, allowing irregularity, brush marks, and drawn line to remain visible within the final repeat.

A key influence is Kantha embroidery from West Bengal, traditionally made by women repurposing worn saris and dhotis into quilts using simple running stitches. Often described as “paintings in embroidery,” Kantha textiles depict everyday life, animals, birds, flowers, and folklore. Their softly undulating surface, rhythmic stitch lines, and narrative quality strongly informed the visual language of this collection.

Early cartography and cosmology also play a central role. Renaissance and medieval maps—where geography, mythology, and astronomy overlap—provided inspiration for layout, symbolism, and the blending of fact and imagination. This includes a remarkable 15th-century planisphere created by a Venetian monk, alongside Renaissance maps shown in Myths and Memories at the American Museum & Gardens. These works, rich in ornament and speculation, encouraged a more poetic approach to pattern.

Folk objects such as a 19th-century elm gingerbread mould, deeply carved and worn by use, also influenced the collection. Its patina, material honesty, and naïve imagery informed both texture and motif development. British folk art and maritime traditions, including the work of John Craske, alongside Enid Marx’s Fishing Boats at Crail, further shaped the collection’s quiet narrative tone.

STITCHED BIRDS

Design Story

Stitched Birds is directly inspired by East Indian Kantha embroidery. Organic trail shapes form the layout, with birds held within softly defined motifs. The surface texture was created using fine painted lines to mimic fabric grain, while painted stitch-like marks around the edges give the impression of appliquéd cloth. The design was painted very small initially to test balance and spacing, with careful attention paid to negative space. The process was slow and deliberate. Once painted, the design was repeated digitally and colourways were developed in Photoshop. The palette is restrained and earthy, using three colours to maintain clarity.

CUMULUS LUNA & CUMULUS SOL

Design Story

Cumulus Luna is a night-time design inspired by early astronomical diagrams showing planets arranged in concentric orbits, as seen in medieval manuscripts such as Isidore of Seville’s De Natura Rerum. Clouds, stars, moons, and planets form a whimsical, naïve composition. The clouds were painted by hand, with pencil and smudged marks added to create shadow and depth. Stars and moons were painted in gold tones and given the same surface texture. The sky itself carries visible brushwork, reinforcing the hand-painted quality of the design.

Cumulus Sol shares the same origins as Cumulus Luna, but shifts the scene into daylight with the addition of a stylised sun. The same hand-painted cloud forms and textured surface are used, creating continuity between the two designs. Together, they offer a playful yet considered interpretation of historic cosmological imagery.

A WAVE FOR JOAN

Design Story

This design is based on an embroidered tablecloth made by Josephine’s great-grandmother. The original work featured naïve motifs arranged as a border; this design reinterprets them into a full repeating wallpaper. Animals, stars, trees, and gentle wave forms create a playful and personal composition. The motifs were redrawn and painted by hand in the studio, preserving the spontaneity and charm of the original embroidery while adapting it for a larger scale and repeat.

ISLET HOPPING

Design Story

Islet Hopping is an enchanted woodland scene drawn initially in pen. Fantastical trees, animals, ladders, and stairways link imagined islands, creating a narrative landscape. The design references traditional Toile de Jouy but with a more whimsical and contemporary tone. Once the layout was drawn, colour was applied digitally, allowing subtle clouds to sit quietly in the background. The focus remains on the trees and playful architectural elements embedded within nature.

ISLET HOPPING TOILE

Design Story

This design shares the same imagery as Islet Hopping but is reduced to a two-colour palette. It nods more directly to traditional toile techniques, offering a simpler, quieter version while retaining the narrative quality of the original.

IKAT CLOVER

Design Story

Ikat Clover is an organic, hand-painted design inspired by Central Asian ikat textiles. While traditional ikats are created through resist-dyeing threads before weaving, this design interprets their rhythmic irregularity through repeated painted lines and layered brushwork. The process involved building up paint slowly, line by line, to create depth and movement. The design is bold in scale but works well as a coordinating wallpaper. It is available in both bright and earthy colourways, reflecting the richness of historic ikat fabrics.

HEDGEROW

Design Story

Hedgerow is inspired by British woodland and includes leaves and seeds from beech, ash, and hazel trees. The design was painted onto a fabric ground before being printed flat, preserving the movement and texture of the original painting. The layout was initially drawn very small, then enlarged and transferred to a larger scale. Layers of texture were built up to suggest bark and foliage, resulting in a design that flows gently across the wall.

SHIPS

Design Story

Ships is a whimsical maritime design depicting floating vessels on imagined journeys across the sea. Inspired by British folk art and the life and work of John Craske, the design presents a playful take on a traditional subject. Every wave was painted individually by hand, creating rhythm and movement across the surface. The wallpaper uses a half-drop repeat and is available in three colourways, all within a blue palette to maintain cohesion.

RITA STRIPE

Design Story

Rita Stripe is a refined, versatile stripe design with a flat linen-like texture running through the bands. Inspired by Kantha textiles, the stripes are built from fine, hand-painted lines and simple geometric forms. Considerable time was spent experimenting with stripe width, spacing, and repetition to achieve the right balance. The earthy colour palette and tactile surface make this a quiet but sophisticated design, suitable for a wide range of interiors.
